DECKING
FAQ
Q. What is Vinyl Decking?
A. Vinyl Decking is a Hi-Polymer material manufactured from
a special high-impact,
weather-resistant polyvinyl chloride compound. It is specially
formulated for outdoor
exposure where color and physical properties are important.
Q. Is Brock Deck or Sheerline made of recycled materials?
A. No. Our decking is an engineered vinyl formulation that
includes ultraviolet inhibitors to
shield it from the sun's harmful rays. Impact modifiers give
added strength and impact
resistance in all weather conditions, while preventing cracking,
denting or splitting.
Q. What are the main feature/benefits of Vinyl Decking?
A. Vinyl Decking is a maintenance-free material that is durable,
defies weathering, and never
needs sealing, or painting. The nonporous surface cleans
easily and resists stains. It stays
cooler than composites, plastics, wood, or concrete deck
and patio products in the summer sun
and is weather resistant all year long. Vinyl decking is
an ideal solution for the enhancement
of residential, commercial and marine properties.
Q. Will the color of the Vinyl Deck change?
A. No. Our Decking has a higher concentration of UV inhibitors
than premium vinyl siding.
The white, tan, and gray colors chosen are consistent throughout
the product profile. Our
decking is non-porous and will not absorb moisture.
Q. Do Brock Deck & Sheerline Deck have a warranty?
A. Backed by over 45 years of manufacturing excellence, Brock
Deck has a lifetime residential warranty and a
twenty-year commerical warranty. The deck railing has a lifetime
warranty (non-prorated) against warping, rotting,
corroding, flaking, peeling, blistering or discoloration.
Sheerline decking and railing is manufactured
by L.B. Plastics and both have a lifetime warranty. As accelerated
age testing is ongoing, the life
expectancy for our decking is estimated to be at least 35
to 40 years. However, it should outlast us all!
Q. Is Vinyl Decking slippery when wet?
A. No. Our vinyl decking provides an excellent walking surface
for shoes or bare feet. The
grooved design pattern provides quick water drainage and
excellent traction. Both products exceed
UL standards for skid resistance.
Q. How do I keep Vinyl Decking Clean?
A. To keep Vinyl Decking looking like new, wash with a garden
hose. If certain spills are
allowed to dry (coffee, fruit juice, kerosene), it may be
necessary to use a non-abrasive
household cleaner to remove residue, then rinse with a hose.
Q. What happens to Vinyl Decking in cold weather?
A. Our Vinyl Decking performs well in all weather conditions,
hot or cold.
Q. Is Vinyl Decking environmentally safe?
A. Yes. There are no toxic chemicals in our Vinyl Decking.
They are safe and 100 percent
recyclable.
Q. What dimensions are the Vinyl Decking available in?
A. Brock Deck planks are 1 1/2" x 5 7/8" and are
available in 4', 8', 12', 16' and 20' lengths.
Sheerline planks are available in 12', 16' and 20' lengths
and it comes in both 1.625" x 5.75" and 1.625" x 11.75".
Q. How is the Vinyl Decking fastened to the joists?
A. Both our Vinyl Deck kits offer a system using ordinary
treated lumber (or any other
suitable framing material) as a frame structure. Planks are
held securely to the deck's under
structure in a patented process using aluminum Clip-Strips,
snap locks or "Z"strip attachments.
Stainless steel screws are used to secure the attachments
to wood, steel, or aluminum
stringers. Brock Deck planks snap into the attachments leaving
no exposed fasteners, while
Sheerline decking utilizes interlocking flanges and also
has no exposed fasteners.
Q. What tools do I need to work with Brock Deck?
A. A dead-blow hammer should be used to set Brock Deck planks
into the Clip-Strip or Snap
Lock attachments. Both Decking products can be straight or
angle-cut and routed just like
wood. When using a power saw, carbide blades are recommended,
and don't forget your
safety goggles.
Q. What joist spans should I plan for when using Vinyl
Decking?
A. Our Decking's maximum span is 24 inches (however 16" is
recommended). Joist spans
should be 16 inches on center for residential applications.
On long deck surfaces where plank
ends are butted, double joists with 3-inch wide Snap Locks
are used. Complete engineering
specifications are available.
Q. Does Vinyl Decking require spacing between planks?
A. No. Use of Clip-Strip or "Z" strip attachment
result in a uniform gap between planks.
Q. What is available to complete my Vinyl Deck project?
A. Our Vinyl Deck components include trim options such as
T-Trim, L-Trim, C-Channel,
plank end caps, rim joist covers, column cladding and numerous
vinyl railing systems. All
mounting accessories are available to complete any project.
Illustrated installation guides and
phone support is also available.

VINYL INFORMATION
With the gaining popularity in "PVC" decking
and fencing it is necessary to understand what you are buying
and the differences in the products available on the market
today. Issues like ultraviolet protection, color retention,
impact retention, proper use of co-extrusion, the company
behind the product, etc., are all items that affect the quality,
are important to the end user, and longevity of the product.
It is important to have UV (ultraviolet protection) in
vinyl products that are intended for exterior applications.
The
UV additives work like a window shade and protect the vinyl
from breaking down, becoming brittle and discoloring. An
industry standard is set at 10pph UV additive, be sure the
products you are considering have the necessary amount. 100%
of our fence and deck products are produced with the 10pph
UV protection using TIO2, the best available additive for
vinyl fencing,
Several companies are now offering color options. The proper
technology is available today and can assure that a gray
will stay gray, a white will stay white etc., but you must
use that technology and not cut costs with cheaper color
additives. Our products use only the very best proven color
blends available today, and we are assured by certification
that each rail car delivered meets our strict requirements.
In today's vinyl industry the manufacturing process of
co-extrusion is becoming very popular in reducing material
expense. The
co-extrusion process in and of itself is a proven process
and is very successful if used properly. All too often however,
it is used to hide an inferior, sub-standard base material
that the manufacturer can purchase at considerable savings
i.e., post industrial scrap and post consumer scrap are common
among the materials used. The
outer layer will then be a quality material that can effectively
hide the sub-standard base material. All too often the base
material is lacking the necessary impact and UV additives
to assure an end user of worry-free performance.
All our white, tan and gray products are 100 percent extruded
out of the very best virgin vinyl compounds available in
the fencing and decking industry. We also realize our responsibility
to reduce the amount of scrap generated at our facility and
practice a very aggressive regrind and reprocessing program.
Warranty issues are always on a consumer‚s mind when
making large purchases of decking or fencing products. There
are many flashy, highly promotionalized warranties on the
market, but more importantly the consumer should look at
the company behind the products. Questions like how long
has the company been making vinyl products? How long has
the
company been in business and with what other products? What
is their track record with those products?
We have a company behind us that has been in business since
1952, and has been manufacturing vinyl fencing since 1984,
the beginning of the vinyl fence industry/market as we know
it and vinyl decking since 1988 -- the beginning of the vinyl
deck industry/market as we know it. The warranty for our
Triple Crown Fencing products is a Lifetime warranty and
for our Brock Vinyl decking it is 20 years. Our Sheerline
decking and railing are both
warranted for life.
Quality can often appear to be very subjective to the consumer
and sometimes almost an elusive issue. As a consumer, nothing
seems to speak louder and give the proof necessary like credible
references and visiting a facility in your own area where
the product is installed and being used. Please contact us
for the installation nearest you.
FENCE FAQ
WHAT IS TRIPLE CROWN FENCE MADE OF?
The base ingredient of Triple Crown Fence products is PVC
materials, which are first-run, virgin materials and are
not applicable to any recycled materials or products.
IS IT RECYCLED PLASTIC AND DO YOU USE THE CO-EXTRUSION
PROCESS?
Triple Crown Fence products are not co-extruded nor do they
have any recycled material in them.
The use of the co-extrusion process is becoming very popular
in reducing material expense; The co-extrusion process in
and of itself is a proven process and is very successful
if used properly. All too often, however, it is used to hide
an inferior, sub-standard base material that the manufacturer
can purchase at considerable savings. such as post industrial
scrap and post consumer scrap.
The outer layer will then be a quality material that effectively
hides the sub-standard base material. All too often the base
material is lacking the necessary impact modifiers and UV
additives to assure the end-user of worry-free performance.
WILL IT TURN YELLOW?
No. Royal Crown Limited's products contain
10 parts titanium dioxide (TIO2) which prevents ultraviolet
degradation. Triple
Crown Fence products carry a limited lifetime warranty.
WILL IT BREAK IN EXTREME (HOT/COLD) WEATHER?
Royal Crown
Limited's products have been engineered to accommodate normal
temperature swings and climate condition
changes.
It is normal to expand and contract during temperature changes.
As with plastic, it becomes less flexible in colder weather
conditions. However, unless subjected to unusual impact (sharp
objects) it will not break.
WILL IT BURN?
Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC)
possesses excellent fire performance properties and in particular
will not burn once the source
of heat or flame is removed. As measured by a standard test
(ASTM D 1929) with a flash ignition temperature of 391 degrees
Celsius, PVC is among the least easily ignitable polymers.
DOES IT CHALK?
Because of high quality mix that makes the Royal Crown limited
product, a very light chalking can occur, which is a normal
occurrence of any pigmented surface. Washed away by rain
or normal weather changes this process basically self-cleans
the product and keeps the surface looking like new.
WILL A WEED EATER SCRATCH OR HURT IT?
Experience shows that 7riple Crown Fence withstands routine
proper maintenance including most types of weed eaters.
WHAT IS THE WARRANTY AND WHAT DOES IT COVER?
The fencing system carries a manufacturers limited lifetime
written warranty stating the fence to be free of defects
in material or workmanship that results in warping, rotting,
corroding, flaking, peeling, blistering, or abnormal discoloration
of surfaces.
HOW DO I CLEAN IT?
If cleaning is ever required the use of a non-abrasive liquid
agent is normally sufficient. However, for more stubborn
stains, a product similar to Soft Scrub may be helpful.
CAN I PAINT IT?
There should be no reason to paint your Triple Crown Fence
product. If you decide to paint it you need to consult your
local paint supplier for a two-part epoxy-based product,
which would have to be repainted in time. Any painting of
your Triple Crown Fence product voids the Limited Lifetime
Warranty.
CAN I ADD A HOT WIRE ATTACHMENT?
Attachment for hot wire can easily be added to your Triple
Crown Fence product.
What makes Royal Crown Limited vinyl better?
Royal Crown Limited has perfected a formula to ensure its
lasting quality. The quality of the ingredients and the proportions
are important. For example, Royal Crown Limited Fence uses
12 parts per 100 of Titanium Dioxide (Ti02) as a U.V. inhibitor.
That is more than any other vinyl fence manufacturer uses
and more than would be found in a premium vinyl siding. Vinyl
siding companies do not use recycled materials because of
the inability to produce a consistently superior quality
product. They also use 100% virgin vinyl and monoextrude
their profiles
So a thick wall on the profile is better?
Not necessarily. There are several heavy walled fence profiles
on the market that contain low-grade fillers and are not
a quality product. Wall thickness is only one element of
quality. The vinyl formulation that gives the product strength,
flexibility and protects it from the elements is the most
important factor. TRIPLE CROWN Fence profiles have ample
wall thickness without sacrificing the quality throughout
the profile. Wouldn‚t you rather invest in a vinyl
fence that doesn‚t skimp on the key ingredients?
How long has TRIPLE CROWN Fence been available?
TRIPLE CROWN Fence is an industry pioneer. In 1982, they
began producing post & rail products for corrals, paddocks
and pastures. Horse owners quickly recognized the safety
benefits of a flexible, yet durable quality vinyl. They now
offer dozens of attractive residential and agricultural styles.
What other features make TRIPLE CROWN Fence different?
Their patented Rail Locks. Most manufacturers notch the
rail components, which can weaken the wall and potentially
fail
if someone or some thing collides into the fence. The TRIPLE
CROWN Fence Rail Lock has proven to be exceptionally strong.
The hidden Rail Lock eliminates the nails, screws or staples
that eventually rust and fail.
Does TRIPLE CROWN Fence meet building code requirements?
Fence code requirements vary from community to community.
TRIPLE CROWN Fence meets or exceeds national building
code requirements but installers must be certain that
the chosen
style is appropriate for the application and meets community
standards.
